How much is car tax in the UK?

Cars registered after April 2017 pay a flat £200 per year (£110 for 6 months). Older cars pay based on their CO2 emissions band, ranging from £20 to £790 per year.

Is car tax free for electric vehicles?

No. Since April 2025, electric cars pay the standard £200/year rate. Cars registered from April 2025 onward with a list price over £50,000 also pay an additional £440 luxury supplement.

Can I pay car tax every 6 months?

Yes for most cars. Cars in CO2 bands A, B, and C (up to 120g/km, registered 2001–2017) can only be taxed for 12 months. All other cars offer both 6-month and 12-month options.

What is the luxury car tax supplement?

Cars with a list price over £40,000 (or £50,000 for electric cars) pay an extra £440/year for 5 years starting from their second year of registration, on top of the standard rate.
