How to Check a VIN Number
Finding the VIN is the first step in protecting yourself from vehicle fraud. Here is exactly where to look on any UK car.
What are you looking for?
The VIN is a 17-character sequence of numbers and letters. It never contains the letters I, O, or Q (to avoid confusion with 1 and 0). When you check a car, you should find the VIN in at least two different places on the vehicle and ensure they match the V5C registration document (logbook) exactly.
Primary VIN Locations
The "Visible" VIN
Look at the bottom corner of the windscreen on the passenger side. There is usually a small window in the black masking that reveals the VIN plate.
The B-Pillar Sticker
Open the driver's door and look at the frame (the B-pillar). There is often a manufacturing sticker that lists the VIN alongside weight and tyre pressure data.
The Engine Bay
Check the bulkhead (the metal wall between the engine and the cabin). The VIN is often stamped directly into the metal here.
Under the Carpet
On many cars, there is a small flap in the carpet under the driver or front passenger seat that reveals the chassis-stamped VIN.
Decoding the VIN
While the full code looks random, it follows a strict international format:
- Characters 1-3: World Manufacturer Identifier (e.g., WBA = BMW Germany, SHS = Honda UK).
- Characters 4-9: Vehicle Descriptor Section (Model type, body style, engine).
- Characters 10-17: Vehicle Identifier Section (Specific production number and year).
Checklist: Spotting the Red Flags
Warning Signs of Tampering
- Scratches or grinding marks around the stamped VIN.
- The windscreen VIN plate looks loose or misaligned.
- The VIN on the car doesn't match the V5C logbook.
- Pop rivets holding a VIN plate look new or non-standard.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the VIN is missing?
Walk away. A missing or defaced VIN is a major red flag that the car is either stolen or a cloned vehicle.
Is the VIN the same as the Chassis Number?
Yes. In modern parlance, they are used interchangeably, though "VIN" is the standard legal term.
